Hi most nights I chat to a friend both of us using MSN Messenger 7.5 and
Windows XP Pro. I am using cable broadband and he is using ADSL. Every
night, if we are online, at exactly 1am the connection is cut. There are no
scheduled tasks at that time on either computer, and usually the only way to
re establish the connection is for him to reboot his computer. However this
could be wrong as it might take the time his computer takes to reboot before
the connection can be re established. So has anyone any ideas as to why this
might happen.
Thanks Ron

Ron;
I have no idea except...
What happens if he does not reboot his computer?
The first step is to isolate if/which computer is causing this.

My modem drops the line if I turn the TV off after having the TV on for more than 3 hours. Figure that one.

It will eventually reconnect after about 5 mins. I think rebooting his
computer is a red herring. It is at his end. He has changed the time and
date on his computer and still at exactly 1am I get the message that he has
ended the conversation.
Thanks Ron

Is your friend on a dynamic IP? If his ISP resets his IP that would cause
the disconnect.

it sounds like one of the pc's had their IP address changed at that time. You
can check this by opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig /all before
and after the comm unication break and see if the IP address has changed.
