MSN Messenger not detecting UPNP NAT Connection

Bill Laycock

Hello,
I am using XP PRO and MSN Messenger Beta 7. I use messenger often for
voice and video calls on a different machine and wanted to do the same
on this one.

I have installed UPNP and the Gateway functionality and see the services
started in XP. When I start Messenger, I look at the
Tools-Options-Connections tab and see that messenger say that "You are
connected to the Internet through an unknown NAT." The other machine
running Beta 7 on the same LAN says the connection is Symmetric NAT UPNP
enabled. I have tried many gateways (Netgear, Linksys, linux-igd). All
have the same result.

When I try to place a voice call, messenger realizes that it has a
NAT-UPNP connection. Here is a snippet of the log:

[18:39:49.178] Voice CEchoClient::OnMessage >> Got EC_SELECT_MESSAGE
from WSAAsyncSelect for socket = 1656, error = 0, event = 1
[18:39:49.178] Voice DoTheRightThing() loop m_ePhase == 1
[18:39:49.178] Voice Echo Service - received echo response.

[18:39:49.458] Voice Echo Service - Error sending discard packet to

[18:39:49.458] Voice Echo Service - Fatal Error. Aborting.
[18:39:49.458] Voice CEchoClient::DoTheRightThing > Unknown connection,
but not changing m_eSubStatus. Previously detected connection: Unknown-NAT
[18:39:49.458] Voice Echo Service - Done. Killing timer and posting message.

Anyone come across this?

Thanks,
Bill
