MSN Messenger doesn't fetch contact list after SP2 upgrade

P

Paul McG

Ever since I loaded XP SP2 on my PC, my MSN Messenger
(6.2.0137) no longer works.

Interesting it does appear to login to the server as it
will kick me off it if I had logged in from another PC.

It's just that the Contact List never comes back. No Error
messages, just the two dancers dancing around each other
forever.

I have Norton Internet Security Installed, tried de-
installing - no difference.

I have the new Micrsoft Firewall Disabled - no difference.

I de-installed SP2 - hi presto that works!

I put SP2 back on - and to my dissapointment MSN Messenger
again doesn't login fully again.

I'm sitting behind a NAT firewall, but that's not the
issue, as it obviously works whilst no SP2 installed. Also
have a second PC XP +SP2 behind the same firewall, where
MSN works fine.

Any help appreciated

Greetings Paul,

Try this: Firstly shut down Messenger (right-click its icon in the notification area and
click Exit), then click Start, then Run, then type:
%appdata%\microsoft
and click OK.

Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and choose Delete. After all this, restart Messenger
and see if the problem has been corrected.

Hi Jonathan,
thx for the tips, but unfortunately clearing what appears to be some kind of
cache didn't work.

I deleted as instructed the folder MSN Messenger first, then tested, but no
joy.

Then I deleted the Messenger folder also, but still no joy.

Note, Messenger, (4.7.3000) also suffers the same way.

Any other ideas?

Hi Jonathan,
did exactly as said, but no joy. Still have the same issue.

Also went ahead and did the same to Messenger folder, but still no joy.

Any other ideas?

Hi Jonathan,

did exactly as you said, but no joy, still have the same issue.

Also removed the Messenger folder, but still the same.

PS, as well as MSN Messenger (6.2.0137) not retrieving the contact list,
Messenger (4.7.3000) has the same issue.

Hey Jonathan,
just noticed that both Messenger and MSN Messenger work normally when I
establish a VPN tunnel to my corporate network. The one I'm using is
Contivity from Nortel Networks. Needless to say, as soon as I drop the VPN
connection I loose Messenger or MSN Messenger.

Just thought this might provoke some more ideas.

Hey Jonathan,
I'm all dried up with respect to ideas, and I've not heard much from
yourself.

I've deinstalled and reinstalled, Windows Messenger, MSN Messenger, Symantec
Internet Explorer, I've deleted repeatedly the caches that you pointed out
before, but the only way I can get Messenger to retrieve its contact list is
when I remove SP2.

Any more ideas? Or am I looking at a complete reinstall:-(
