MSN Messenger 6.0 not starting with Windows

Andrew Warren

Hi all.

I am running WinXP Pro. I have installed MSN Messenger
6.0. I set "Automatically run Messenger when I log onto
Windows", and, "Automatically sign in when connected to
the internet". When I restart my computer, these chosen
actions do not happen. If I then check these options,
both checkboxes are "Un-ticked".

After installing MSN Messenger 6.0, I uninstalled Windows
Messenger. I have since re-installed it, thinking that
might help, but it didn't.

In Administrative tools/Services, MSN Messenger is
showing as automatic and started.

I have tried uninstalling MSN Messenger 6.0, and re-
installing it, but the problem persists.

Any advice would be much appreciated !!!

Hi Jonathan and all,

I did a scan using registry Mechanic Version 2.0, by
Winguides. It found one error only. Here is what it
said:

Key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVers
ion\Setup\MigrationDLLs]

Invalid value: {5945c046-1e7d-11d1-bc44-00c04fd912be}
=C:\ProgramFiles\Messenger\migrate.dll

Correction: C:\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice\Office10
\Migration\MIGRATE.DLL

Do you think this error has anything to do with
my "problem"? I am not super confident in tampering with
the registry. Do you have any ideas for safely doing any
repair???

Best regards,

Greetings Andrew,

I would recommended not doing anything 'Registry Mechanic' or Norton's 'WinDoctor', etc. tell
you to 'fix' in the registry, usually it ends up making a problem, rather then fixing it.
The problem you're seeing below is probably just a "leftover", from your Office 2002
installation, I'd leave it alone.

As for your specific problem, I'd first uninstall MSN Messenger 6 (from Add or Remove
Programs), then start the registry editor by clicking Start, then Run, enter "regedit" and
click OK.

Then go to (they look like small folders) My
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger. Click the 'MSNMessenger' key
(which again, looks like a folder), then go to the Edit menu, and then choose Delete. Say
"Yes" to confirm the operation. Then reinstall MSN Messenger 6:

Hi Andrew,

I'd forgotten about that "Detect and Repair" option -- I'll have to do some research into
exactly what it does (may provide some better solutions).

Thanks for the feedback =).

Thanks heaps for the info Jonathan. Before I read your
reply, I realised that I had somehow inadvertantly fixed
the problem. I am not really sure exactly how (?!?), but
think that maybe it had something to do with
using "detect and repair" in MS Outlook. Also, I am glad
to know that I am not getting DCOM error 10000 since re-
installing Windows Messenger.
Also, I must agree with you about using programs such
as "Registry Mechanic". I have only heard warnings about
using software like that. Out of desperation I have used
it occasionally, so far without any noticeable problems,
but I always make sure to backup any changes I have made
with it. Just last week at my work I saw a different
computer "damaged" by a co-worker using a similar
program, and even reversing the changes made had no
effect.
