Hi!

I tried installing a program with .MSI extension and notice an information
window that Windows cannot open the file. I know that Windows XP knows it
was a Windows Installer Package because of the icon but upon double clicking
it, it prompts with an information as indicated. I can previously install
applications in MSI file format but for this I don't know what happen with
my PC. I am using Windows XP Professional. Hope you might help.

Hi MP - You can try installing Windows Installer 3.1 v2. Here's the
writeup:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=893803

and here's the download page for the XP version. You'll need to validate
that you've a legal copy of XPPro:

Please post back with your results.

Hi Jim,

it didnt work, what I've notice is that the MSI actions are empty. Is there
a way that I can revert the actions by reinstalling MSIEXEC or windows
installer?

Hi MP - Well, help us out here a bit more -

A little more info, please. What didn't work? - the download of Windows
Installer 3.1v2? the install of 3.1v2? the installation (right click,
'Install' or did you just double click the .msi?) of an .msi file using the
newly installed 3.1v2? What exactly do you mean that "the MSI actions are
empty" - that there are no right click options? - that nothing happens?

As to "reinstalling MSIEXEC or windows installer" - reinstalling the
Windows Installer is just what you were previously advised to do by both me
and MVP S.Sengupta. The 2.0 version of Windows Installer is intrinsic to XP
and is normally "re-installed" by reinstalling SP2, if that's what you are
asking - that's why you were advised to download and install Windows
Installer 3.1v2 instead.
