mshtml.dll error

Michael Jurik

The computer has WinMe and IE 6.0. The browser will not
work on Microsoft sites, including Win Update. It will
work at MSN, Yahoo, and so on. When I try to open a page
at Microsoft support, I get the message "Explorer has
caused an error in MSHTML.dll. Explorer will now close."

I checked the knowledge base and tried the recommended
steps at kb article 318153. When I get to step 12 under
Win ME, extracting mshtml.dll from Windows update setup
files, it will not extract. I get the message that
mshtml.dll is protected and cannot be extracted. ???

Anybody have any ideas why IE 6 will not work at MS pages?
The computer is virus-free and spyware free. Any ideas are
appreciated. thanks.

I tried the recommended site but the info didn't apply to
the problem. I did the searches and so on but no evidence
of CW. Thanks. Any other ideas most appreciated.

It is possible you may have parasites, spyware, adware,
malware, or hijackware on your system causing the problem.
Download and install, you *must* update the programs prior
to running to be sure they have the latest definitions, then
run the programs below. They are free and very effective.Be
sure to run both SpyBot and Adaware, as what one does
not detect the other may. It is important that you follow all
directions carefully:

Follow the Steps below in order:

Step 1

SpyBot Search & Destroy: Free
http://download.com.com/3000-8022-10289035.html?tag=lst-0-2
or
http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

AdAware: Free
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
or
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

AdAware Free:
Manual updates: Scroll down to Updates Available -
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download

CWShredder: Free
http://tinyurl.com/2l9kl
or
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

If the problem persists, continue with Step 2:

Step 2

HiJackThis: - Free

Go to
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html ,
or
http://tinyurl.com/2oce8
or
http://tinyurl.com/2atxk

and download HiJackThis. Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the
Temp folder, doubleclick HiJackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button. Press that, save the log some place you remember where it is. Most
of
what it lists will be harmless or even required, so DO NOT fix anything yet.

Open a the copy of your log in NotePad and made a copy. Then you can go here
to post you log:
http://forum.aumha.org/

Go to the HiJackThis section on the forum list and click to open. You can
post as a guest. It's also a good site to keep for reference. The experts
there will analyze the log and report back the results. Please allow at
least a few hours or a days time for a response.

Remember, you must return to the HJT site to get your answer. It is a good
idea to click the "Notify" box so that you will get an electronic
notification by e-mail to let you know when a response has been posted.
But, you must still return to the site of your answer

If you have not already done so, then you might try a repair of IE6 as
follows:

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...port/kb/articles/Q194/1/77.asp&NoWebContent=1
or
http://snipurl.com/6s3r

Or.... do an uninstall and reinstall of IE6.

Hope this will help.

Except for that last symptom others have reported that removing
their Google toolbar fixed your symptom. Another known third-party
interferer is Norton's Internet Security 2000:

That probably means that it is in your Dllcache (or equivalent)
I don't have your OS and am only aware that it has a SFP feature
which is roughly the same thing as NT5's WFP feature.

<title>KB267282 - A Description of the Sfpdb.sfp Database File</title>

<title>KB265371 - How to Extract and Replace a Protected File in Windows Me</title>

However, I don't think that this is what you want to do anyway.
It would give you a very old version of that module which has
been regularly updated by critical updates (e.g. as distributed
by Windows Update). So once you get your access problem
straightened out just visit Windows Update and see if you can
get a more recent version of the module that way.

If you need more help reply with:
1. Your OS and maintenance level
2. Your IE and its maintenance level (e.g. from Help,About,Versions:)
3. Your version of mshtml.dll (e.g. from File, Properties)

If you prefer you can capture the equivalent of #2
by entering the following script fragment in an IE Address bar:

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion
