mshtml.dd error Wndows XP

I get the below error message when attempting to access certain web sites and
ALWAYS when attempting to access HOTMAIL. There are no spywear/adware issues
with my machine. This problem was there prior to upgrading to SP2. I thought
upgrading to SP2 might fix the problem. Couldn't I just install an updated
"MSHTML.DLL" file?

First eliminate any scumware.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Thanks Frank,

I'm going to assume that "scumware" is the same as "spyware/adware". I
don't beleive my problem is related to spy/scum/ad ware. I can surf to most
internet sites without any problems. there are only a few sites (that I
visit) that give me problems, along with HOTMAIL always giving me a problem.
I have 3 machines in my home all running Windows XP sp2, all running the same
virus and spy/scum/ad ware protection, all operating with the same ISP
(wireless connections). I can access the websites in question on the other 2
machines without any error messages.

Thanks Sandi,

I don't take anything for granted when it comes to virus protection and
spy/scum/ad ware protection. I always take the neccesary precautions when it
comes to protecting my machines against these infestations. Let me go back to
my initial question: If the file that is being named in the
error..."MSHTML.DLL" is corrupt, can't I just replace the file? and if that
file is corrupt......why do I only get the error message on certain websites?

Sorry to sound like a broken record here but in all likelihood there's
nothing wrong with your MSHTML.DLL file. Such problems are usually caused
by malware and the only way you can confidently say the machine is
malware-free is to have your HijackThis log reviewed by an expert.

When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to
use. It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware.

wrigley,

One thing that you seem to be missing is that just because the crash occurs
in mshtml.dll does not mean that the *cause* of the crash is in mshtml.dll.

To see this look at the *callers* of the crashing routine by using
your drwtsn32.log. Hint: you can find the crashing task by searching
for (in an English version of Windows) the line prefix FAULT ->
The Stack Back Trace which follows that can show you the calls
which led up to the crash. Also occasionally the next section of the
dump, titled Raw Stack Dump, has yielded some eyecatchers which
gave some clues about the real culprit. Typically then the culprit turns
out to be some third-party incompatibility which has nothing to do with
a standard version of IE.

I have to run with my tail between my legs!!! Out of the blue last night I
get a Symantec popup with a virus notification. "BACKDOOR.COREFLOOD" trojan
virus. Norton quarantined it, I had to manually remove it. All my original
problems are now gone. :) Thanks to everyone for their input and help!
