You can check to see if there's an SPUninstall folder on the system.

However, this might not work, because there's a

%systemroot%\System32\DLLCache

folder that stores backup copies of such files. So you might want to
check in the DLLCache folder first, copy the file from that folder
to the appropriate place, then restart the computer. If it works,
then I'd do a system scan for viruses. You might have some kind
of NIMDA virus there.

If it don't work, and you keep getting the same error, delete the
file from the DLLCache folder first, then delete it from it's other
location. Then copy a file from the SPUninstall folder. Warning:
Different gina.dll files have different functions. If that doesn't fix
the problem, scan the system for viruses. Make sure you do
NOT have a virus. Hackers tend to target the GINA file as well
as the NTDLL.DLL file.

The GINA file is what presents the LogOn dialog box during
bootup I think.

One of the service packs should have an updated msgina.dll.
I don't know which one it is, but you can usually extract their
files from the ServicePack.exe by going to the DOS prompt
and typing the command followed by /T:C:\TMP\ /C

Then look through those files.

Let us know if that helps.

There is a KBA for this in conjunction with SP3 that may help as
backgound. KBA # 329316

State your file system type. FAT or NTFS will determine in pasrt
what you can try.
One selecting F8/safe mode it freezes.
On booting from the CD and selecting Repair I get an error message
saying the Harddrive cannot be found.

Are you using a HD controller that requires a driver (like a RAID
card or add-on IDE controller)? That could be a reason for this
message.
I would prefer not to reformat the harddrive as I wouyld like to

If recovering data is the highest priority, then stop trying to fix
things. Connect the drive to another system to attempt data
recovery.

Are you using any Symantec products or Netware support or anything
else that alters the active GINA?
