I have been unable to successfully install MSDE (SQL
desktop engine) on my Windows XP Pro machine. when I run
setup from a command prompt with sapwd and securitymode
parameters, the windows installer box comes up and
appears to be installing. When it says it has 4 seconds
left, the progress bar goes back to the beginning and the
engine is not installed. There are no error messages

If you are running a firewall and antivirus, they need to be disabled. Also
you need to be logged in as an administrator.
