msconfig won't run

Using run I type in msconfig.exe and I get the hourglas for less than a
second and then nothing. It is in the correct location according to the other
posts. I expanded a copy from my Win XP Pro disk and that didn't work. Some
help places on the internet say a virus will hit msconfig and regedit, but my
regedit works. I don't think that is the problem here.

Why does Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappear while opening?

Try this go to start>run and type this in the run box sysdm.cpl

I have the same problem but this command worked for me

I did this and it brought up the System Properties box.
Selecting the system restore tab brings up a RUNDLL Box.
An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,
control_rundll"c:\windows.000\system 32\sysdm.cpl","
Still no msconfig.exe

No trouble with Regedit or Taskmanager and renamed copies work as well as
originals. renamed Msconfig still won't work.

I would still be looking for a virus of some sort or variation.
Some viruses actually disable virus scanners on a computer.

Perhaps an online security/virus check
Symantec

Trend Micro House Call:

Panda ActiveScan;

McAfee FreeScan:

Kaspersky Labs On-line Virus Checker:

BitDefender Online Scan:

You could have a variation of these viruses
W32.Spybot.Worm
