Prior to removal of virus infection etc, I have this msconfig.exe on my
desktop where it will appear each time I boot up and able to use the
functions. Now, upon boot up, it appears only for a split of second and its
gone.
The 'msconfig.exe' attributes:- 'Read only' and 'Hidden' are both uncheck.
Next to it Advance' > 1/ File is ready for archiving, 2/ For fast searching,
allow Index service to index this file.
- both these are check.

I tried to reinstall the 'msconfig.exe' , it does not help. Something is
causing it to appear and disappear. How can I get back the 'msconfig'
function so that I can use it. Thanks for your assistanve

What exactly do you mean when you say that you tried to
re-install it? How did you do this?

I'm wondering if you have malware on your computer - have you run any
antispyware scans? If so, what software did you use?

You might try posting this in microsoft.public.security.homeusers....

Note also that msconfig is not part of Windows 2000 - where did you get this
file?

The prog was from MS and from the desktop, unzip and double click it, the
dialogue box will appear.. Each time you boot up, this dialogue box will
appear and if you click it, the System Utilty will open. I am just doing that
hoping that the duialogue box will appear but it wont 'stick' or stay
'permanent' now.

I also have the same problem with the task manager (after the virus
cleaning) but I managed to sort it out after changing the registry value from
1 to zero (after reading some of the postings here)

Downloaded from where? I'm not aware of any place on the MS downloads page
that will give you MSConfig, although you can certainly copy msconfig.exe
from a WinXP box to your Win2k box (and put it somewhere in your path, such
as %systemroot%\system32\)

:>and from the desktop, unzip and double click

Where did you copy the file to? If you're going to use it, copy the
executable somewhere useful rather than launching it from a zip file.

See above.

Malware infestation, perhaps?

The prog was from MS helpdesk a while back. and its in the zip form whe nI
frist received it and the version should read as " 5......"instead of "
6.....'. I dont have to unzip each time I need to use it. The dialogue page
will appear each time I boot up.When I click it, the system utility will open.

'permanent' here means it will appear and disappear from the screen.

I ran Adaware SE, Spybot 1.4 and Symantec Client Security, all with latest
definition
and some virus been removed. I believe there is some infections still not
beenremoved. Any idea which 'safe' malware should I use? Thanks for your
assistance.
