Hi,
msconfig.exe has stopped running under Start, Run but when
I search and fine the file and click on it, it works fine.
Can anybody help me find the answer why?
Thanks

This happened after doing.....what (exactly)? Is this a dual boot between
Win98? Is XP installed on D? Is your boot.ini files correct?

In the meantime: Msconfig won't run:

Trojan.Ahero.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.ahero.html

This issue has been traced to an improperly formatted BOOT.INI file. This
is a hidden file, usually in the root directory of the C: drive.

This file can be opened in Notepad. A typical BOOT.INI file looks like
this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Previous Operating System on C:"

One specific issue that was noted was multiple "operating systems" sections.

To extract a new copy:

Go to Start/Run/CMD. Insert your XP CD into the drive and enter the
following command:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\MSCONFIG.EX_ Z:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES

This will extract a new copy of the MSCONFIG.EXE from the CD.

Thanks Kelly for your answer.
Unfortunately, I do not know exactly after doing what this
behaviour started, it has been this way for quite some
time.
Yes I have dual boot (Win98 on C and XP pro on D). NIS and
NAV are fully updated and no virus of any sort was found.
Before I dare use the command you advised is there
anything I have to take into account because XP is on D?
Thanks a lot

Most welcome and thanks for the feedback. What I find interesting is that
this same issue was posted hours apart. Which makes me think something has
changed even though you say this has been going on for awhile....something
changed this. If not, it would have been from the get go.

As per extracting the file, no.

Dear Kelly,

I followed your instructions carefully. But the problem
remained (msconfig.exe does not run from Start>Run but
does otherwise). Therefore, I searched for msconfig.exe
and this time found 3 files (+msconfig.exe-0083cdfe.jpf in
D:\WINDOWS\Prefetch) instead of the earlier 1. Going by
the date the files were used one understands that the one
in D:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 is the old one. Though
all the three work by clicking on them, yet msconfig.exe
still does no work under Start>Run. Was I supposed to do
something more which I have missed?

I would be thankful for advice.
