MSConfig closes spontaneously

I have recently installed the Home Edition of XP. When I
run the msconfig utility, the utility closes down on its
own and even if I do manage to make some changes, these
do not take effect.
I have scanned my computer using an online scanner for
viruses and there are no viruses reported.

Try another scanner, as this behavior is almost always attributed to a bug.
Does Task Manager do the same thing if you hit ctrl+shift+escape?
