MSAS Beta I

I recently uninstalled MSAS Beta I. But I know there are probably tidbits
scattered all over my HDD and registry orphans I need to clean up. Is there
a Microsoft site with detailed instructions for complete removing this
software? I have read here Windows Defender will uninstall it when
installing WD, but do not wish to install WD at this time. Want to wait for
the bugs to work out a bit longer on that one, if you know what I mean. Sure
would appreciate any info/guidance to fully uninstall MSAS.

Hello,
Two things you can do...
Run disk clean up which comes with Windows or download CCLEANER from
www.ccleaner.com I find this does a better job than Disk Cleaner ( sorry
MS!!)
When you download it, run it, click issues, than scan, "it will list
everything that's not used anymore", Click Fix it. It will ask you if you
want to make a back up, do so in case something goes wrong. Once you have
fixed everything, run the scan again as I sometimes find more things show up!!
Good luck!

The new version of Defender that was just released today solves SOME of the
problems reported with the old one. You might want to give it another look.

Hello Buttoni,

Have a look at this article. It may be relevant to your problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, Andrew. I have been using CCleaner for some time
and regularly scan for issues and get rid of them. Don't recall but a couple
of MSAS entries there after uninstalling the SW. But there are still lots of
registry entries for Giant/MSAS in the Registry. Dare I clean them out or
just let the orphans sit there for eternity. I was hoping someone here could
direct me to a Microsoft site that itemizes the Registry keys that are safe
to delete regarding this uninstalled software.

Old Rebel, I think I want to wait awhile longer before downloading Defender.
Glas to hear the latest version is a little better than the last. I have
been following the posts on this forum (and other user forums) and I think
this software has too mant bugs and update issues/problems right now. Will
probably install it eventually, but I think I'll let other brave souls work
out the kinks and bugs a bit longer before doing so.

That read was most informative Engel. My search of topics didn't find it. I
found lots of the tidbits they mentioned and deleted them. Ran CCleaner and
Disk Cleaner as recommended also. Will just leave any registry orphans where
they are for now. Maybe if I ever install Windows Defender, is will get
whatever is left there, as I have read on this forum that Defender uninstalls
MSAS before it installs itself.

Thanks again.

I suggest that you run CCLEANER under Fix issues but make a backup of what's
deleted...so if something goees wrong you can just restore it!!
On my Desktop I have a folder called SECURITY for backups and my Anti Virus
and all Anti Spyware programs.
Makes it easier to find if I have to restart computer in safe mode!!
In the meantime I wish you luck!!

Have now taken all recommended actions and system is running just fine, and
somewhat faster, I might add. I think everything removed cleanly and safely.
Thanks to all who repled for you help with this.

Thanks for the link, Steve. Wasn't familiar with the Microsoft beta Registry
Cleaner. Will check it out.

I don't think any registry cleaner is "safe." I've seen reports of this one
causing problems, too. I've used it myself, and not had issues, but I'm not
very picky. I can't say that I found any significant performance
improvement, though.

Thanks, Bill. From what reading I've done on such forums, I don't trust
registry cleaners, either. But just for fun, I first backed up my registry
and then let the tool analyze my registry. I then unchecked 95% of the items
(which took awhile). What i left checked and let it delete were entries
"obviously" relating to McAFee Spamkiller, McAFee VirusScan and McAFee
Privacy Service, which have been uninstalled for some time on this pc.
Interesting, I had previously run the McAfee removal tools for all three,
too. Judging by the number of said entries in the MSRegCleaner, even the
McAfee Removal Tools don't thoroughly clean out the garbage! No problems
with pc operations since running the cleaner. As I still have McAfee
Personal Firewall running, I deleted nothing if not 100% certain the entry
was not associated with MPF. Firewall is still running smoothly. My system
seems a tad faster, but I can't tell if it's a result of this McAfee reg
cleanup or the lighter Avast 4.7 upgrade I downloaded this week.

It'd be interesting to hear what's considered "best practices" with regards
to uninstalling and leaving stuff behind. Most uninstalls seem to leave a
lot behind.
