MS Word docs/RTF files to html?

Are there any utilities that will allow one to convert MS Word or RTF
files to html? MS Word puts too much junk into its conversion, and
basically all I want is simple formatting.

Unless you just prefer html, I'd recommend using Atlantis Nova. It
will read .doc files and you can save them back to RTF. Depending on
the document, html markup can add quite a bit of bulk too.

760k download. Very light and well behaved.

19k .doc becomes 1k .rtf
46k .doc becomes 9k .rtf

I use the Word Viewer, in the toolbar Select All, Copy, then paste into a
text document. Works well. I use toolbar as I had problems in a context
menu doing this in Word Viewer.

Sydney;

This may be overkill however OpenOffice (openoffice.org) does this with
any format (inc .doc & .rtf) that it can import. An additional benefit
is it's trivial to edit the resulting conversion.

I can't attest to whether OO's html code is "cleaner" than MS'
conversion...Haven't looked.

I am not sure what version of Word you have but with Word 2003 you can save as web page, filtered, and it removes the extra formatting that Word puts in it. A 20.0 kb doc saved as unfiltered html is 4.37 kb and filtered is 1.59 kb

This might be an alternative.

Hope this helps.

For earlier versions, Microsoft has a free tool on their website that
will remove much of the junk that save-as-html puts into their file.
For word 2000, try this link,
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;236967>
or go to search.microsoft.com, and search for "word filter html".
