MS Update #KB960859 keeps "installing" over and over + other probl

B

Bob Cmil

I am using Win XP SP3. This problem is happening more often lately. When it
does occur, it's from a cold boot. I use my login and the screen comes up
with just the wallpaper. The mouse works. The keyboard works. I can get Task
Manager by CTRL-ALT-DELETE, which I use to restart the PC. When I restart,
the PC comes up fine. The PC seems to think it's running fine.
Another thing I can report that's happening is Windows Explorer has been
crashing on me too. Not often. But I'll get a message saying Windows
Explorer was shut down to protect the computer. Is this related? (Yeah, I
still like using Win Explorer.) May or may not be related.
Finally, MS Update #KB960859 keeps "installing". It seems to happen once
a day. Related problem? Symptom?

(It took me FOREVER to find out somewhere I could ask this question, and I
STILL don't know if I'm in the right place. I used to email a Microsoft help
person and would get an answer in a day or two. Now it's 59 BUCKS JUST TO
ASK A QUESTION????? DELL won't help either - "sir, you have a "hardware
warranty" and not a "software warranty". Jerks.)

Any assistance would be appreciated. Now if I can only find my way back
here to check the answers...

How to troubleshoot common Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows
Server Update Services installation issues
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602

Tried this...?

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Reboot.

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer (for your OS):
( Windows XP 32-bit : WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe )
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/...6F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en

Reboot.

and...

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Then follow the instructions here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Reboot.

Defragment
How to Defragment your hard drives
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848
* will take time

Ensure your hardware drivers are up to date (from the hardware
manufacturer's respective web pages.)

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer
and visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a
CUSTOM scan...

Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time. Rebooting as needed.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one and any of the "Office Live" ones or
"Windows Live" ones fornow. I would completely avoid the
Optional Hardware updates. Also - I do not see any urgent need to install
Internet Explorer 8 at this time.

I had the same problem, but hate to think that I must become an IT professional to fix an automatic update from MS. The instructions seem correct, but after several hours and reboot number 6 - I trashed the PC and purchased a Mac. Sorry, I just could not take it anymore.

I tried downloads and so called fixes today that being the SuperAnti Spyware
and MalwareBytes etc and ran the programs as suggested. As I feared they tell
me in order to achieve a full PC repair I need to buy the Pro version. I
already have the full paid for version of Regcure that I run about twice
weekly which seems to do the same thing. After running the
SuperAntiSpyware/Malwarebytes, rebooted etc as instructed, I ran my Regcure
software and it told me I had several hundred low and medium level
faults.....seems the other suggested programs did very little as free
versions .

Now after spending a lot of time trying to sort out this annoying KB960859
update problem it still still keeps returning every time I log on no matter
how many times a day. Now another problem has occurred....the software
suggested refuses to uninstall, really frustrated !
I think I'll definately buy a Mac next computer upgrade

WRONG! There are the free versions of the two tools and they work
well.

As for Regcure, this falls into the registry clean-up tools catagory.
It must be noted that all registry clean-up tools can / will render
the Windows Registry damaged or corrupt. You must use extreme care
when you decide to use one.

If you cannot use free tools like SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes to clean
up whatever mess you allowed to infest your computer (and yes - they will
clean it up fine with the freeware versions I provided direct links to) -
you will fail in using a mac. ;-)

Well Shenan, I´ve got the same problem as Colin and I did follow your
instruction but the same problem still remains. Do you have any other
suggestions?
I cant see why I should pay MS to get the support needed to solve this.

I assume you are in Sweden?

Looking at the KnowledgeBase article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960859

It clearly states...

----------
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft
subsidiary for support issues with security updates, visit the Microsoft
International Support Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=4
----------

Sorry - I cannot read the web page if I select Sweden, so I do not know if
you can get the same free support (although I don't see why not.)

In any case, making sure you have tried these KB Articles:

There are plenty of error msgs in the logs but windows update says that the
installation was successful...

Many thx to anyone who can solve this ;-)

Well Shenan, I´ve got the same problem as Colin and I did follow
your instruction but the same problem still remains. Do you have
any other suggestions?

I cant see why I should pay MS to get the support needed to solve
this.

Shenan said:
I assume you are in Sweden?

Looking at the KnowledgeBase article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960859

It clearly states...

----------
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling
1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and Canada or by contacting
your local Microsoft subsidiary. For more information about how to
contact your local Microsoft subsidiary for support issues with
security updates, visit the Microsoft International Support Web
site:
http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=4
----------

Sorry - I cannot read the web page if I select Sweden, so I do not
know if you can get the same free support (although I don't see why
not.)

In any case, making sure you have tried these KB Articles:

How to troubleshoot common Windows Update, Microsoft Update,
and Windows Server Update Services installation issues
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602

How to troubleshoot Windows Update or Microsoft Update
when you are repeatedly offered an update
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910339

Did you try downloading and installing the update manually?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=b3331388-1e52-4924-b512-23275a8fde84

If it fails to install manually, *immediately* after you attempt,
can you access your WindowsUpdate.log file and post the last 50
lines or so here?

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093
Now I have tried to install manually in safe mode and it still
doesn´t work.

Hare are a copy out of the windowsupdate.log from the last attempt
from the windows update web page:
There are plenty of error msgs in the logs but windows update says
that the installation was successful...

Many thx to anyone who can solve this ;-)

Let's verify something...

Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name and edition) while the line starting with the word
"version" will give you the rest of the story.

Post _both_ in response to this message verbatim. ;-)

Did you try the Microsoft Support link I gave you? Does it tell you that
you cannot get free support when you visit the page?

Many thx to anyone who can solve this ;-)

Let's verify something...
Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

Winver:
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234 : Service Pack 3)

Regarding the free support: It´s only available on phone during office
hours, not so useful for problems with my private computer. To get support
over email I have to pay 650 SEK (approx 70us$)...

Many thx for trying to help!

Hi Paul,
What does your script do? I'm not too keen to run scripts on my computer if
I cant be sure that it is safe.

It is a vbscript (so you can download it and edit it if you want) - but it
essentially writes a key to your registry so that when something checks if
the KB article in question is installed or not, it sees it listed and
assumes it is (whether or not it is.)

Ok, now it starts to get interesting. I looked at the script and it wont
help me since I have the swedish version (the script will never find
"Security Update for Windows XP (KB960859)" since that text is in swedish in
my registry).
Q: Can I just run the line:
WshShell.RegWrite
"HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB960859\","You
will no longer be prompted for KB960859 update." , "REG_SZ"
To get the same result as the script? But that line is in english - does it
matter? I have checked my registry for the same information as the script
does in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\KB960859\Comments and it seems to be there (except
for the language...).

What does the line above do really? Does it enter that text to the registry
and then the windows update reads it and does not try to install KB960859
anymore? But in my computer I already nave several lines in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB960859\ like
installdate, registrylocation and more - it looks really that the information
that alread is there should tell windows update that KB960859 is installed.
I'm puzzled.

I can provide a screenshot of the contents of my registry for
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB960859\ if anyones
interested...

I guess the script would have to be in Swedish for it to work. Just change
the English to Swedish.

Post your key here, I will try to redo it to Swedish.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB960859\ in my
registry if that is what you asked for?

Here is a better idea, just load the script with notepad and change the
English to Swedish, then save it and run it. Watch out for word wrap.
