MS Sound Recorder

I'm using Windows XP PRO and I'm trying to record sound
from my microphone (which works fine) but the recording
cuts off after 60 seconds. Is there any way to extend the
recording length past 60 seconds? Or is that just it?

You can do it. Mute everything on the input, open sound recorder and push
record. When it stops in 60 seconds, push record again and make a blank
file as long as you might need. Call it "temp.wav" or what ever name you'd
like. To record something long, open temp.wav in sound recorder and record
over it. At the end, push stop and modify as needed, then chose "save as"
to give it a name. Close out and your temp.wav will be there for the next
time you need more than 60 seconds.

You can make it as long as you wish, and there are no gaps since you
"record" silence on the file.

There is a trick, if you do not want to bother with third party programs

Record max duration of silence, save as silence.wav. Now use Edit -
Insert File to insert copies of that (possibly saving intermediate
longer versions, say 5minsilence.wav) until it is as long as you will
need. Then record over the top
