MS Security Center

Recently I went thru getting rid of a Malware/spyware problem(posted in
security general"strange security message"),so of course I am making sure all
my security measures are tweaked and up to date.
My question is that when I go to the ms security centre, there is a message
at the top of the window saying"ms security center is currently unavailable
because the service has not started or was stopped".Is this because I am
using norton internet security(spyware edition)?BTW,the auto updates are okay
and I know I can't run two firewalls at once.
Am quite p.o.'d that norton didn't catch malware issue.Am paid up for one
more year, but am considering other options.
Just want to make sure I am not missing anything....
Thanx

If you installed the Symantec Security Center, then yes that is why the
Windows one isn't running. You should have an entry in your Start Menu
for the Symantec Security Center and possibly one also in your Control
Panel. So check and see what you've got installed.

BTW,I am running xp home,sp2.
Another question...should I (can I) download and run the free Antivir
program along with running norton? I was very impressed by the experiment
that D.Lipman did by testing all the different anti virus programs!(thread is
in computer security general) The freebe detected the most number of viruses!
Figures!

You should not have two full-featured antivirus programs running
resident. In fact, some antivirus software will not work if you even
have another av program installed, or the install will fail. If you
don't like Norton (and you will not be alone there!), then replace it
with something else.

Thanx for the reply Malke.
So the ms security centre was never started because of having norton pre
installed when I bought the computer...makes sense!
I will totally uninstall it before I choose to replace it.

Well , I suggest you scan again your computer and make sure your computer is
clean. Norton doesn't stop Windows Security Center.

Scan with Panda's free ActiveScan (check for ALL kind of malware)
http://www.activescan.com

Perform a full scan of your computer. When it is finished , the scanner
allows you save the generated report on your hard drive. It is basic TXT file
so you can simply do it. Then post the report here if there is any malware
and we'll give you suggestions how to clean it.

Then , make sure the Security Center service is active.
Start->Settings->Control Panel -> Administrative tools->Services and make
sure the service accosiated with Security Center is ON.

I don't like Symantec products but they do have good corporate editions and
Norton System Work .

Antivir , AVG , Avast are all free antivirus softwares.
You can also try Nod32 which is really good offering users maximum
protection on low resourse with daily updates and advanced heuristic.

Panda_man, Norton Security Center is a new part of the Norton programs
and it does stop the Windows Security Center. McAfee has something
similar, too.

Yes , Malke , but this Norton Security Center is only in version 2006 .

The OP says that he/she uses Norton Internet Security antispyware edition
(read carefully OP's first post) .
Symantec 2006 versions of NIS are not separated into non-antispyware edition
and antispyware-edition . This separatness was only in version 2005 and
that's why I assume malware infection because TMack is probably not using NIS
2006 but NIS 2005.

I did perform a free panda scan the other day and the only thing it showed
were the cookies I forgot to delete before doing the scan..so thats all
good, thanx for the heads up on that.
Yes,I am running nis 2005. In your reply you mentioned to Malke that it is
the reason that I got infected. So besides making sure I stay updated, what
else can I do to make sure it won't happen again? I have read all the ms &
independant links on info about safe computing.I am becoming almost anal when
it comes to computer safety!
Any further advise would be appreciated!
Thanx!

Yes,I do have norton security centre in my control panel and in my start
menu...like I said..it is what I am running. But why do I get the feeling
that running the 2005 edition is compromising my security and making me
vulnerable to malware infections?
Thanx for answering my original question.

BTW,just went to admin tools>services and it shows that the security centre
is "disabled".
From a previous reply,I thought I couldn't run two av programs at once?
Please clarify and advise.
Many thanx

Hello ! Yes , you do have 2005. I have never heard of Symantec Security
Center in Control Panel so if you wish you can uninstall it if possible. Then
after you uninstall it , you can goto Control Panel -> Administrative tools
-> Services and enable Windows Security Center.

Using Norton IS 2005 doesn't make vulnerable. However , there is one thing
that will really increase your protection with Norton old versions.
Also ,as you use Norton you might want to increase your protection.
If you use Norton 2006 version ,you are already much more protected than the
old versions. However ,if you use Norton 2003,2004 or 2005 version you
probably know that Norton's Live Update offers only weekly updates which is
very very bad if there is an epidemic of new threats (such as Sober ,
Mitgleider ,Netsky ,MyDoom.........)
That's why ,if you use version 2003/2004/2005 you could be interested to
understand how to use Symantec's Intelligent Updater in combination with Live
Update:
