MS Intellimouse not working in Vista

I have an old MS Intellimouse Explorer (USB) that works quite well on
a Windows XP Home computer.

On a new Vista Home Premium computer with the latest Intellimouse
driver (6.0.6000.16386) when I try to set the options I get the
message:-

"Some mouse settings might not work until you connect a Microsoft
mouse to a USB port on you computer ....... etc"

And when I do set the options for the two thumb buttons the actions I
set are ignored.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Anyone know of a solution apart from buying a new mouse?!!

Google and MS Knowledge base searches not at all helpful :-(

Try unplugging the mouse and plug it back in if it's an USB mouse.

Thanks for reply but I have already tried it in different USB ports.
