MS Fax wont auto answer

I am having trouble getting FAX to AUTO-ANSWER reliably.
I have a fax printer set up in printers and faxes, have
enabled it to recieve, and have set it to answer after 3
rings.
In the fax options I have also chosen answer after three
rings, and started the fax monitor. The modem works fine
for sending faxes, and dialing up to the internet. It
will answer and recieve the fax properly if I click
ANSWER NOW, and SOMETIMES it will automatically answer. I
wont change anything, dial it again, and it wont answer.
I have no idea why sometimes it works, and I have no
idea why it doesn't work as it should.
I have tried a new modem, I have tried changing various
settings fot FAX and MODEM and ensured the correct
country is chosen etc, if someone has any suggestions I'd
love to hear them! :)

Thanks,
Mat

After reading thru some other posts of a similar nature
to mine, I see that Windows XP is very picky about the
modems it will work with.
I went straight to the Hardware comaptibility list, now
called "the windows catalog" and purchased an LT Win
Modem, as its in the list. Guess what, It still doesn't
work.
I tried the faxing software that came with the modem
and guess what .. it still doesn't work.
Am I ever going to get Windows XP to answer a fax
reliably? Or should I stop blowing more money on it now?

Did you look for any hints in the Event Viewer?

I assume you have enabled it for receiving. Can you tell us what happens
when you try to receive a fax? Any error messages? Also check the event
viewer for any events generated by Fax. This will help in diagnosing the
problem.
