MS-DOS boot disk. Help.

Recently, I tried to run some old MS-DOS games under WinXP. However, none of
my games was able to run (because all these games use the file DOS4GW.exe,
which requires direct hardware access and extended memory, not supported by
the command line)

I tried every emulator i found on the net (DOSbox, Virtual PC, Virtual
Machine) but nothing,

So i decided to make a DOS boot disk . Everytime, i insert the disk, i will
boot to pure DOS, and when i eject the disk, Windows XP will load.

So i need to find a bootable version of MS-DOS, that:
1)can fit in a diskete
2)be able to acces my CD-ROM (ok, i dont expect to access my NTFS partition)
3)can run games like that (doom, speed haste e.t.c.)

Untill know, i tried the MS-DOS boot disk that you can make with WindowsXP
(but i wasnt able to acces the CD), and MS DOS 6.2 (this one couldnt fit in a
disk)

So what version of MS-DOS do you recommend and where i am going to find it
(post link)?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Put a diskette in your floppy drive, select 'Format...' on right click
and then 'Create an MS-DOS startup disk'. When it boots it will say
'Windows ME'.

MS-DOS 6.2 can fit on a single floppy . . . it just depends on how much of
the extra fluff you consider part of the operating system. The original
installation media included 4 floppies, but you probably don't need any of
the supplemental files off the 3rd or 4th floppies, and can pare down the
other two by deleting extraneous files you won't be using. For example, you
probably don't need your boot floppy to include files like defrag.exe,
debug.exe, sys.com, choice.com, etc etc. Figure out what files you need and
they'll probably fit on a single floppy. If you use version 6.22 or
earlier, you'll still need to add your own CD driver. That wasn't part of
DOS, and typically came from the CD drive manufacturer.

I suggest you try a Win98 boot floppy (aka, DOS 7.1). It should work just
as well as DOS 6.2, but by then a generic CD driver was included that works
with most modern CD drives, saving you the trouble of tracking down your
drive manufacturer. Visit www.bootdisk.com and download the file to make
yourself a Win98 boot floppy. Boot from it and choose the menu option to
boot with CD support, then see if your game CDs work. Beware that some
games might need you to tweak things like config.sys and autoexec.bat, but
if you need help with that it would be better to move to a more appropriate
newsgroup, such as comp.os.msdos.misc.
