MS bluetooth keyboard - causing apps to exit

We have a MS bluetooth keyboard and mouse hooked up to XP. (They
communicates with computer via a USB bluetooth receiver that came with
the keyboard/mouse.)

For a while (few months) things worked fine. Then we started noticing
this behaviour:

The first 20 mins of keyboard use are fine. Then the weirdness begins:
typing on the keyboard causes the application with the keyboard focus to
completely exit, silently (after entering about 3 characters). Very odd.

So I replaced the 3 AA batteries with new good brand ones, thinking that
might be the issue. But still the same problem.
Can anyone shed some light on this very odd issue?

thanks
alex

I have now discovered that removing the USB keyboard+mouse, adding PS2
mouse/keyboard, then doing a reset doesn't cure anything. However, power
off and then restart from cold, and the keyboard is back. I suspect that
using the bluetooth keyboard will cause this problem to crop up again
though..

Update... still using the PS/2 keyboard, and even after reboots, I still
get very erratic keyboard behaviour (repeated/dropped characters etc)

D'oh! Turn out the ps/2 keyboard was broken. We've ditched it.
Another ps/2 keyboard is working fine.
Bluetooth keyboard is still an issue though.
