MS Anti-Spyware Build 615 beta

The link on the Microsoft site seems to be still 614 even
though the page does say it is build 615.

I have found the correct software download is being mirrored
on Softpedia.com The download is 6.54 MB. If you don't
want to wait for MS to fix their server and update for MSAS
you can download the new version, it claims to fix the many
updating problems that have been talked about.

I saved the file, renaming it 615 beta by inserting that
along with the MS name. I shutdown the program by right
clicking the icon in the system tray and then used
add/remove software to uninstall it. I then browsed to the
Windows/Program folder and deleted the MS AntiSpyware
folder. That will cause the wizard to run so you can
configure the program fresh.

Follow-ups will go to General

There is no legitimate source outside Microsoft for Microsoft downloads.
Softpedia.com is not a mirror for Microsoft, it redirects to Microsoft.
Since they both go to the same place the only difference is Softpedia.com is
a middle man and the Microsoft is direct.

What do you suspect? I think that the issue is at Microsoft
or perhaps the college which is my ISP. My computer is
running Ad-Aware SE Personal and SpyBot S&D as well as
SpywareBlaster. I also have run McAfee AV and AVAST AV.
The MS MSAS page says that the new build is 615, but the
link on that page returns the 614 file. I have tried
running the validation and just for kicks even tried it w/o
the validation. I have also used Mozzila to download the
file. I've run disk cleanup, deleted all Temp files,
uninstalled MSAS and deleted it's folder.

BTW, my mother maiden name was McAnulty.

Is it a good idea to download Microsoft programs from a non-Microsoft site?
Especially security software?

It depends, generally I would not do it, but since the MS
download was screwed and Softpedia is just about as
trustworthy as MS, I tried it and it worked OK.
I scanned it on downloading to the local drive and checked
the properties for Microsoft timestamp etc.

It all looked good and the program seems to run fine, will
know more after a week of use.
