MS Access 97 Gone wild

B

Brian

I have this MS Access 97 multiuser database that had
locking issues with the multiusers. Solved by changing
memo fields to text. Now I am getting a lot of corruption
in the System Tables as they contain OLE and Memo fields.
I am currently on Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 1.
A lot of the KB cure-alls is to go to an updated Jet
version, but only if you upgrade to Microsoft Office 97
Service Release 2 (SR-2). This is something I can not do,
and how sure do I know it will help! I am getting
messages such as the jet database engine stopped the
process because you and another user are attempting to
change the same data. Error 3197. Not a Valid Bookmark.
Reserved error (-1601); there is no message for this
error. Those are just a few.

Too bad, because that is the solution to this and other problems.

May we ask WHY you can't update to SR-2 for 97??
It's a free download from Microsoft.

It's a free download from Microsoft.

When Windows 98 "optimizes your apps so they load faster" to an Office 97
install that is pre-SR1 it will modify the files in a manner that makes
installing the Service Releases impossible afterwards without a complete
uninstall (including the Office "cleaner" utility).

SR1 will "look" like it's installing when it really isn't. You have to use
logged mode to see what it is NOT doing. Then SR2 will refuse to install
because it says you haven't yet installed SR1.

I went round and round on this with MS for quite a while before they suggested
that the only cure was the complete removal and then reinstall of Office
(followed immediately by the SRs).

I'm not saying that's the OP's reason for not installing SR2, but just to point
out that there are cases where it is very difficult.

Humm...interesting Rick. Did not know this.
Haven't had any problems myself, but I guess I may have
been lucky!
Thanks for the info.

I work for a very Large corporation where everything has
to be tested, approved, exception in place, and we are in
the process of going to XP Desktop w/ W2k or W2k3
Servers. Therefore someone felt or feels, (had a lot of
layoffs the past years), that those who support can
suffer for a year. Thank you for confirming my answer.
I know there was mention of Win 98. We are currently
running Office '97 SR 1 for the Desktops, and W2K for the
Server.
Thanks, Brian

I didn't know that either.
