MRU Programs reappear after removal in start menu

I'm having a weird problem with the most recently used programs list in the
Start menu in Vista. I've removed several of the programs that appeared on
the list when I first got the computer, most of which I don't use. I removed
several of them to make room for programs I actually want to appear on the
list, using the right-click->select "Remove from this List" feature. But no
matter how many times I do this, whenever I restart my computer, or turn it
on after it's been shut down, the programs that I removed are back on the
list again. Anyone else had this happen or know what to do about it?

I never bothered to remove any of them but they have disappeared. Sorry,
but I didn't notice when they did so.

If the list of programs you want to see in that location doesn't change that
often, and if you don't need to have items added automatically to that
location, you might just set the number of recent programs to zero. Then just
pin the ones you want to the start menu.
