MPEG1 files from HP R707 crash on WinXP

I have an HP R707 digital camera that captures MPEG1 video (320x240, 30fps).
I cannot view these files on my computer, they crash every application that I
try to use to view them--including Windows Explorer if I just browse to the
directory containing them. HP support had no idea, and I could not find info
elsewhere with definitive information.

I thought it was something flakey with my old computer (WinXP SP1), but it
happens on my new one (WinXP SP2). What really boggles me is that these files
cause no problems on my wife's WinXP Media Center 2005 computer. I have tried
to view the files directly off the camera (as a removable disk drive), rather
than downloading them, so I know it's not that the files are corrupt when
downloaded to my machine verses my wife's.

Also, I can view other MPEG1 files (downloaded from the web, for example) on
my computer.

I'm wondering if it is a conflict with codecs installed on my computer.

What is the message in the Event Viewer after your PC 'crashes'.... (Control
Panel, Admin Tools, Event Viewer).

That's an awful lot of codecs, did you install a codec pack?

I have a couple of audio editing packages on my computer that have installed
some of the codecs (MAGIX Audio Cleaning Lab 2005 and Sony Audio Forge 7.0),
plus the Media Explorer for my Creative Zen Micro MP3 player. I believe that
the Sony Audio Forge is the only one that handles video, so I tried
uninstalling it, but the problem still exists. (It had installed a
MediaConcepts MPEG encoder/decoder.)

Here is the Event Viewer record after trying to just navigate with Windows
Explorer to the directory containing the *.mpg files.

Using a program I saw referenced in another post (MMCompView,
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mmview.html), I was able to isolate the
offending codecs. I disabled the following three Ligos MPEG codecs, and,
without rebooting, can now view the MPEG files from my camera!

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lmpgad.ax
- Ligos MPEG Audio Decoder version 3.5.0.64
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lmpgspl.ax
- Ligos MPEG Splitter version 3.5.0.64
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lmpgvd.ax
- Ligos MPEG Video Decoder version 3.5.0.64

I believe these were installed by MAGIX Audio Cleaning Lab 2005 (or MAGIX
Media Manager Silver).

As I can still view MPEG files with those disabled, I wonder if it is worth
the trouble of trying to find an updated version of the Ligos files. I tried
their web site, but they don't seem to support end-users. I've asked MAGIX,
but haven't received a response yet.

Does anyone know if this is a known problem with Ligos' MPEG codec?

Thanks,
Steven
