mpeg & advance slide - jumping to next slide before mpg finishes

[Tried on Office Xp/Win 2k & Office 2003/XP]

Im finding this a bit of a curly one, so any help would be appreciated.

various mpg files inserted into powerpoint, if set to advance slide
automatically will not play the entire clip - It will cut off the last 1/2
sec or so.

This does not happen if:

The slide is not set to advance - the clip plays all the way.
Playing externally via Mplay32.exe - the clip plays all the way.

Ive checked echosvoice.com & the austin myers faq. Anyone come across this?

Does extending the automatic advance time help?

I should've noted - faster machines (p4 1.9ghz) play them fine, its the
slower (p3 667mhz approx) pcs that are skipping the ends. I thought i had
found a fix with extending the slide timing adding an extra second, but there
have been complaints from other users for various slower machines.

Since I have no control over the users machine It makes it a lot tricker.
Given the footage as well, I cannot extend the clips or do fadeouts over the
length.

So im not looking so much for a workaround with this (the easy solution is
to turn the advance slide off and have the users click to proceed) I can't
understand why the skipping is occurring in powerpoint - why is the slide
advancing before finishing playback.

hmmm.

Hmmm is right.

I wonder if the slower machines need to update Direct X?

I tried updating the p3-667 from directx 8.1 to 9.0c - No effect.

Heres the kicker - I booted a win2k machine running PowerPoint 2000.

Running the ppt file - the mpeg's play through to the end, every time.

Perhaps I am using the advance options incorrectly [???]

Still no luck with reolving this. Since I cannot find other cases of this on
the net I'll assume for the moment that this is localised in some way.
However I've only noticed this recently on the current videos given they need
to run to the end (most vids have a fade to black or the like which would not
be an issue of cutting the last 12 frames)

Recent findings.

PPT Viewer 97 runs the videos correctly
PPT Viewer 2003 does not
Inserting the videos on a different machine (WinXP, PPT2003) does not fix
the problem.
Downloading a video that has not been compressed locally (i.e. from a
website) still has the same problem.
Changing the G.O.P settings on the Mpeg Export Settings to contain More/Less
I frames does not resolve the problem.

Videos added via Insert>Movies & Sounds>Movie from file, and having the
slide transition set to advance automatically (after 00.00sec)

AJ, I am experiencing the exact problem you describe here with PP 2003. Did
you ever get a resolution for it? I am looking at getting a PP97 reader
installed but it seems like a bug in PP 2003.
Thanks for any advice to help resolve this.
