Moving xp pro upgrade to new computer

D

Dale

My scenario is this:
Old PC: Dell P4 8100, XP Pro (fresh install) Licensing:
upgrade of OEM XP Home upgrade of OEM ME.

New PC: Dell P4 8300, XP Home OEM install

We do have another XP Home upgrade license from our 3rd PC
that's going away.

How do I get the XP Pro license operating on the "new"
PC? Yeah, I know, buy another upgrade,...short of that I
mean ;)

Thanks

Peter,
Re-read my original post. I want the Pro upgrade seat
moved from the old PC to the new PC.

It'd be simple if I could "downgrade" the XP Pro install
on the old PC to Home, but you can't. At least that's
what Pro says when you try it.

Please reword your question as it is not quite
understandable. Exactly, what are you attempting
to accomplish?

I've got an old machine running XP Pro
and a new one running XP Home.

I want to move Pro to the new machine, and run Home on the
old one.

How do I switch? I'm not being allowed to put Home on the
old machine apparently due to Pro being installed on it
already.

Only way to go from XP Pro to XP Home is to reformat
your drive and reinstall XP Home "clean".

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

7. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Thanks Carey!

It has been less that 120 days since I did the upgrade of
that machine with Pro. Will re-activation on the new
machine via the internet be allowed, or will I have to
call a phone number that's presented at that point, and
does that procedure work smoothly?

Thanks very much once again.

Try activating via the internet first. If that is unsuccessful,
then use the "activate by telephone" option to obtain a new
(and free) activation code....takes about 5 minutes.
