Moving Windows to newly built computer

I have Windows 98 on a Compac and have purchased XP Home
Ed which has not been used. Have had built a new
computer and was going to move my hard drive from the
Compac in order to clone to a new 80gb hard drive on the
new computer. Was wondering how to upgrade to my XP
edition from the 98 version on the old hard drive, and
then remove the old hard drive from new computer.

You'd only be licensed to do this if Windows 98 was a retail copy rather
than an OEM copy. OEM versions are tied to the computer they were purchased
with and cannot be reallocated to a different machine.

A Windows XP Upgrade CD will prompt you for qualifying media (e.g. your
retail Windows 98 CD) when you install it if it doesn't find anything on the
hard disk.

That way, you can start with a clean hard disk. In fact, this is by far the
best way to do it.

Regards

Oli
