Moving tables to inside other tables?

W

wwcp

I have always had a problem moving (cut/paste) an entire Table to a cell
within another Table - it always ends up just outside and above the table
that I'm trying to move it into...(?) (Kinda scary the first time it
happened because this tinnie little 2 cell table blew up to this full page
width huge thing.. lol)

For the last few years this didn't bother me much because I would just
create another Table where I wanted it in the new Table - and, then move the
data and graphics over from each cell.... took awhile with large cell count
tables, but it was my work around... However, this time I am competely
rearranging my whole web site to take advantage of an Include Page of
"custom navigations" and need to move EVERYTHING into new 2 column full page
Tables... arg.... This will take me a week if I can't move complete tables
into the right cell of those 2 column full page Tables...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have....

easiest way;
find the table you want to move in the code itself. (I sometimes will type
an irregular few characters near it in WYSIWYG view (before using fp 2003
which is much better at this))
highlight the code for that table from <table> to </table>, hit cut. then
find your place where you want to put it inside the other table and paste it
between that table's <td> and </td> tags. (using the same trick of putting a
few irregular characters like x##x in the cell, and if necessary using the
"find" so you can find it quickly in a complicated page).

welp, what I do when I want to 're-table' a page is to create my new table below all the content on that page, then drag & drop the content from the above old table into the new table, cell by cell....then delete the old table.

you may want to create a blank template page that fits your web style, with a default table set up the way you want it that way be quicker too.

Boy - talk about not liking this answer... (lol) I've tried both of your
suggestions (work arounds) and not being the sharpest HTMLer on the block
have opted to just create new Tables and populate them cell by cell - adding
& editing each cell as I go ------ a big pain.... But, worth the effort to
get the very nice custom nav Included page that I have created (much more
organized...)

Just wondering WHY FP wouldn't allow "us" to simply move the original tables
around???

Thanks for your help, guys...

I cut/paste a table into another table cell (nesting)all the time.
Sometimes the table size gets distorted but it's an easy fix.

Could mine not nest because I'm using FP 2000? (This IS a lot of work
moving them cell by cell. I use tables for EVERYTHING... arg... lol)

Thanks,

tell ya what,
this would be a good reason to upgrade to fp 2003.
the "split view" and the way hovering over a tag on the toolbar draws a box
around that element's border would truly ease your work and be well worth
the $80-90 the upgrade costs (IMHO).

actually you can create a new empty table down below then select the old table and copy/paste it into the new table below then delete the old table...but sometimes it gets a little messy, and knowing what you're trying to do with includes I figured the longer way may be the best.

FP2000 works just fine, as that is what I current use for all development work.

Click in the table that you want to copy, then Table Menu | Select Table, then right click and
select copy, then click into the table you want to insert the table, and right click and select
paste.

What in the world can I be doing wrong...???

I first create a 1 row by 2 column table.. above (or, below) the current
page of "stuff". And, then I point at (I've always kinda had to first point
at the edge of a table and then left click and drag across the whole table
to get it highlighted) the table I want to move. Then, Ctrl X it... and
then Ctrl V it (I've now also tried using Edit "Cut" and "Paste") into a
cell of my new table. And, bang - everytime it shows up outside the table
- just over the new table - the whole width of my page.... ARG....

What can I be doing wrong?? Maybe it's my attitude.. (lol) Maybe I really
want it to go to the right place too much...(lol) It's gotta be in my wrist
action... (lol)

PS Hey fellas - take a look at my New Nav Look.... I love it... It's
almost too large, but I love the organization it allowed me.. (It took most
of yesterday creating all the new tables, though... But, I still have many
more to go....) http://www.ofgc.net

Don't left click and drag across the whole table. Put your cursor in the
table and right click select table then cut and paste.

Boy, am I feeling inept, here... whew!! (sorry)

OK, so when I point inside a table (in any cell) my cursor ends up either
outlining a graphic or positioned in some of my text. Then, (left click
does nothing) - and, right clicking brings up a window that does (among
others Cell/Table Property oriented things) look like it would like offer to
let me cut and paste - but, those selections are deactivated... (??)

I really apologize for being such a bonehead on this issue... but, it would
really help me cut a lot of work out....

Thanks, again,

Palmer

If you put your cursor in any cell you have to use Table | Select | Table, to get there :)

If you want to use the Right Click method it seems y ou have to highlight select the whole table first then right click.

I use the first method so I don't miss anything.

straight forward... I'm so used to just "pointing" at something and then
