Moving files

T

titus12

I have two hard drives in my computer. I want to put all the files on the
boot drive(C) on to the second drive (D) and take the 'C' drive out. Most
of my programs are on the 'D' drive. What file on the 'C' drive that
handles the desktop and the 'Start' menu that can be copped to 'D'. I want
the start and the appearance to be the same.

Thank you;
David

Unless I am misreading your intentions what you are suggesting will not
work.

In the majority of computers the C drive contains the windows operating
system. It is possible to place a clone of the contents of one disk on
another but you need a clean second drive or partition of exactly equal
size and a third party utility to carry out the operations. From what
you say you have neither. Moving or copying files from C to D will not
result in a functioning operating system.

In order to help you would you please answer some questions.

What is your computer make and model?

Why are you proposing to abandon existing drive C?

What are the sizes of drive C and drive D and how much free space on
each?

Is either drive partitioned?

Other than program files what is on drive D?

What version is your Windows XP CD?

Hope this helps.

(Note: some of the following folders may be hidden. To see them, open
Windows Explorer, go to TOOLS -> FOLDER OPTIONS, select the VIEW tab,
and select "Show hidden files and folders". You can later set that back
to "Do not show hidden files and folders" when you're done.)

Those are in two places, that when combined give you everything on the
desktop and start menu.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\...

and

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\...

where <username> is whatever you're logged in as.

Note there are also other folders in these two areas you probably want
to copy over. These sub folders are all under:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\...
and
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\...

Application Data\...
is used by a lot of programs to store there info

SendTo\
what you get when you right-click on a filename.

(both under \All Users\ and \<username>\)

You can also delete all files under \Local Settings\Temp\
This tends to fill up with garbage after awhile. There may be a file or
two you can't delete because they are still in use. All the rest you can
delete. (If you can't delete them all because one is in use, you can
delete a few at a time until you've got most of them.)

\Favorites\ stores your Internet Explorer Favorites (bookmarks), though
I suggest going into Internet Explorer and exporting your bookmarks and
cookies to a file. Then you can later import them back into Internet
Explorer after you move. (You can also back them up).

You need to think about where the Registry is, and if that needs to be
copied over, or even if it's possible. That I don't know. I suggest
posting that question here.
