Moving files to a folder.

Hi,
I am not sure how to explain this but ill give it a go.
Everytime i move a file to a folder in vista i find that when dragging the
icon across the item seems to highlight other items in the folder. I have the
files displayed in deatails mode and there seems to be blue lines for each
item. The only way i can move my files is to drag the file right to the
bottom of the folder so it does not highlight any other file in the folder.
How do i remove this option so folders display files normally like in xp. I.E
in a white box where the icons are not in a grid or anything like that.

Thanks in advance

The "blue lines" make me think that you've got file selection set to
happen with one click instead of double-click. I've had difficulties
dealing with files when set like that, too. If this is the case and you
don't want the one click behavior (like on a webpage), then you can
change this to double-click from the Folder Options applet in Control
Panel. If you *do* want to keep the one click behavior, try
right-clicking/dragging on the files instead. When you let go of the
right mouse button, choose "Move" from the context menu.

No thats not it, thanks for the assistance anyway i appreciate it.
Whats happening is that i am clicking the right mouse button and dumping the
file in the folder i want it to go. This in turn should then generate the
menu with options which should say copy, move, create short cut, etc. But its
not doing this because its always moving the file on top of another file.

If i go to a file, my items are in deatail view, the problem is everytime i
hover the mouse icon over anyone of the fields in the folder, eg. name, date
modified, etc, The entire line highlights in blue. So if i have about 50
items listed in the detail view there is no where in the folder i can drag
and drop anyother items because it always highlights another file rather than
the blank white space.

This was the default setup when i got vista. XP never had this bizzare thing
what highlights the entire line of a file in details view when i hover the
mouse over it

Well, my Vista doesn't do that. Maybe it's your mouse? I'd try a
different one and see if that works and/or play around with the
sensitivity. If not, then I'm out of ideas and hopefully someone else
can help you.

Sorry I wasn't able to solve your problem.

Hi, Joe.

It's hidden in plain sight. :^}

When you drag the file to the folder you want, hover the mouse and then
don't focus on the line, but on the small text box with a bold "+" sign in
front of it. It will say something like, "Copy to ATI" or "Copy to
Downloads", depending on the name of your folder. If you are pointing
between files, not folders, it should show the name of the volume, like,
"Copy to Data (E:)".

When the hover box says what you want to do, then release the mouse button.

You should see that hover box when holding down either the left or right
mouse button. Using the left button, the copy or move happens immediately
when you release the button. With the right button, you should see the
context menu from which you can choose to Copy, Move, Create shortcut or
Cancel.

Works great, but it's very easy to get so focused on the line that we don't
see the pop-up box.
