Moving Back To XP Home Edition

Hi there,

Having had a bit of fun with Vista RC1 Build 5600 I've decided to move back
to XP Home Edition as it let's me run all my favourite programs without
conflicts etc (you know what I mean). Before re-installing XP Home I
transferred my Files and Settings onto 2 DVD's via the File & Settings
Transfer Wizard in Vista. Everything appeared to be OK and Vista FTW
confirmed the discs had been written successfully. I then proceeded to
re-install XP Home and transfer my folders / e-mail settings and files back
to XP (from Vista) using the XP File & Settings transfer wizard. Everything
seemed to be OK and I advised that I already had my Wizard discs made
howvever when XP wizard tried to read the discs it keeps giving me the
message "Please Insert Disc No1" which I did - FTW won't however read the
disc and insists it isn't the right one - in case I made a mistake when
labelling the discs I tried starting with Disc 2 of 2 and it still advised
that it was the incorrect disc. As you can imagine this has left me in a bit
of a pickle as all my files are now contained on two DVD's but I can't access
the mig files to retrieve my files. Any suggestions would REALLY be
appreciated. Thanks

Try reinstalling RC1, transferring your back files to Vista, and then copy
your files to a DVD without using the FTW. Then reinstall XP Home etc. Think
the wizard was designed to go from XP to Vista, rather than the other way
around.

Hit Windows Update, apply the same service packs you had before. The Files
and Settings Transfer Wizard in XP is version-sensitive - so if you had SP2
and the 32/64 bit version fix applied, you'll need to re-apply both before
restoring your backed-up files and settings.

Thanks for the quick response folks.

Ron K - Yeah I've tried that but Windows can't find any software to read the
mig file - locally or via the net.

Richard - When I re-installed XP I did a full Windows update to ensure I was
protected with the latest Security fixes etc - Is this what you mean?

I think Jon is right and that I'll have to Reinstall Vista - reload my files
off the DVDs, copy them manually onto new DVDs and then reinstall XP - Phew
what a pain in the backside - You would have thought there was an easier way
eh!!

Oh well that's what I get for getting a sneak preview of Vista early!!!!
