movie maker keeps freezing and cannot see the movies on the screen

Hi,
I need help. I am trying to learn to use Movie Maker. Here are the million
questions:
1. I tried all the updates and still not sure if I have Movie Maker 2, It
says in "about us" I have version 5.1 then it says Movie Maker Version 2.1.
Do I have the latest?

2. Then I import some clips, which I copied from a DVD. First I could not
see the clip on the screen, then I could. Then I drag the clip to the story
board and the whole program freezes. I can view the clips using the Media
Player 10, so it must be compatible.

Can anyone help??? I cannot learn the program unless I can get by the first
stages !! Thank you,
Enio

Hi Enio,

Yes, you have the latest v2.1 of Movie Maker. It doesn't work with MPEG-2
files from DVDs...you'll need to convert them to AVI files before importing.

See the Importing Source Files > Video > Discs page of my website..

Hi PapaJohn, Thank you for responding. I checked the files to import, they
are .mpg files, do they still have to be converted to .avi files? And when I
burn them to a DVD disk can I play them on a DVD player? I am a ice hockey
coach and want to take clips from my team's games and then show them specific
clips. Thanks again, Enio

What you're seeing with the MPEG clips in Movie Maker is normal, as it tries
to deal with the clips but doesn't do it effectively. That's why conversion
to AVI is needed.

Once you do your editing in Movie Maker, and save the movie file... you'll
need to use DVD authoring/creation software to make a disc that plays on a
normal DVD/TV setup. Movie Maker's features don't support that part of the
process.

There's a number of steps involved in your process, and lots of choices.
Once you learn and get the first one made, the rest will be routine. I
suggest a small pilot project that doesn't end until you're watching it on
TV.
