Moved XP Home drive to new machine - Access Denied to profile files?

I have a friend running Win XP Home, their motherboard died and we moved
the hard drive (as a slave) to another computer running XP Home to fetch
the files out of their profile folder (c:\documents and settings\person
\...)

When we click on any other users profile the files are exposed and
available, clicking on that users specific folder gives and Access
Denied Error.

The drive is NTFS, EFS options are grayed out on all folders anywhere,
trying to access files as the Administrator (logged on as
Administrator), and don't see a SECURITY TAB in the folder properties.

I've never used XP Home on anything, only Prof.

What could they have done to cause Access Denied for a users profile and
not the others?

Home can't do encryption. Install Pro temporaiily and fetch the files with
efs then remove it or update boot.ini with
"multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Thanks - I was aware of taking ownership and security, but it was
interesting to see that I had missed the "Simple File Sharing" option,
which they are using. I will go back and check that part.

One thing the OP needs to be sure is that "Use simple file
sharing" is /unchecked/ in Win Explorer Tools>Folder options>
View, else the Security tab won't be there.

Took me hours to find out why I couldn't assign myself
permission to view the System Volume Information folder where
Restore Points are stored. Turned out that "simple file
sharing" removes the Security tab so I couldn't alter security
for that folder.

Yes, see my reply to Carey. Simple file sharing will eliminate
the Security tab you need to take control of the folder(s)
you're denied access to right now.

Funny thing is that there is no "Use Simple File Sharing (recommended)"
option on the Folder Options/View/Advanced Settings. I've looked 8 ways
to Sunday and can't find it.

There is also NO TAB for Security when you select Sharing and Security
from the property tab for the folder.

Any ideas why that would be missing?

Re-read the OP. Both machines in question use HOME so EFS is not the
problem. What is the problem is that the SID on the old drive don't
match the SID of the new machine it's in. The only way to "take
ownership" of the files/folders in question (look this up in Help) is
to login as Administrator in SAFE MODE. It can't be done in Home any
other way.

Interesting, as I've never used Home, I was unaware that it required
Safe Mode to do it. I will install the drive in a XP Prof computer and
take ownership that way (if that works). Thanks for the help, we don't
support home users so I've got no experience with XP Home.

No it's not - there is nothing on the Advanced Settings area that has
anything to do with Sharing. I've checked twice, and the account is the
Administrator account. There is also no Security tab on the properties
page for folders/files.

Nothing about this seems to be normal, like it's XP SP negative-8 or
something.

Note that you will not find it on a WinXP Home computer, the
"Use Simple File Sharing" option is not available..
