Move from Win 95 to Win XP

Is this possible? I have a new Dell with Win XP and want to transfer data
and some program files from an old Dell running Windows 95. I tried to use
the Transfer Wizard but Win 95 does not seem to recognize the CD when I
follow the directions for transferring files. If the transfer wizard will
not work with Win 95, does anyone know of any other software or approach for
doing this?

Thank you.

Win95 cannot be upgraded to WinXP, which is why the FAST wizard won't work.
You'll have to backup your data files separately. Burn them to CDs. If you
lack a CD recorder or a ZIP drive, you're looking at diskettes. A workaround
is to e-mail the files to yourself. Don't download the emails until your new
computer is all set up.

Thanks for the info. Since my diskette drive on my old PC is not working
anymore and I have already disconnected my dial-up internet service for my
old PC (using DSL for the new PC), I hope I am able to find and connect a CD
recorder or ZIP drive that works.

There's another alternative, but it's not for the novice:

Take the hard disk out of your old computer and add it to the new computer,
then copy from disk to disk.

Since I am somewhat of a novice, I may keep that option in reserve for now.

I had another thought - I have an unopened Windows ME upgrade here which
works on Windows 95. If I upgrade from Win 95 to Win ME using this upgrade
software, will I then be able to run the XP Transfer wizard on my old
computer? Thanks so much for your help and prompt reply.

Then, if I try the approach of adding the hard disk from the old PC to the
new one, what are the pitfalls of being a novice user? Do I have to
substitute the hard disks one at a time and copy into RAM, or is it possible
to have both in the new computer at the same time and copy directly from one
to the other?

Thank you.

If you're a novice user, don't try it. Bring the old and new computers to a
place like BestBuy or CompUSA. It will be money well spent. At this point,
you haven't left yourself with any other choices.

Do both computers have Ethernet connections? If so you can purchase a
cheap patch cable to network the two machines together.

Actually what Ted has suggested is VERY easy to do, and only takes a few
minutes and a screwdriver to set it up. Why don't you get one of your
computer-literate friends to do the job, or dive in and do it yourself
(after looking up the steps in Google). That's the way to learn.

Thanks for your suggestion. I will look up the steps in Google. Someone
else suggested LapLink so I am looking into that as well.

Thanks for your help - I don't think my old Dell with Windows 95 has an
Ethernet connection but I will check.

I have found success using an old Sigma Data Zip 100 drive. I downloaded
drivers for XP from the Iomega website.

You can buy an Ethernet card and cross-over cable for much
less than the cost of a Zip drive and cartridge.
But why not just remove the hard drive from the W95 machine,
set the jumpers to slave [be sure the jumper on the XP
machine is master] and install it in the new machine and
copy the files. Then put it back in the old machine after
resetting the jumpers.

Thanks for the info on taking the old hard drive out and copying directly
onto the new one.

The Zip 100 file was available to me free of charge, and very easy to use,
and the driver download was free as well. I have already moved all my files
to the new computer.

Free is always nice.
