Mouse quit working

My mouse just all of a sudden quit working. When I checked the mouse
properties, the drivers were gone. I've tried every troubleshooting step for
mouse problems and USB problems. My USB ports all appear to be functional.
I have tried to install a microsoft intelmouse laser mouse that has software
on a disc and it won't read the driver off of that either. I've even done a
complete destructrive system recovery that was suppose to put my computer
back to it's original out of the box configuration. I've also gone onto the
gateway webite and downloaded all driver updates and have downloaded all the
windows updates as well. Nothing has worked. Can someone please help me. I
thought I read somewhere that windows did an update that messed with windows
xp and cause this sort of problem but that they had a fix for it. I can't
remember where I read this or where I can find the fix.
My computer is relatively new. I just bought it in October.
It's a Gateway GT5228 with Windows XP
Thanks!

I would assume that you have some hardware problem. Maybe a driver for
something like the usb/serial port device. Perhaps some plug is physically
broken.

I've done that. It won't recognize any kind of mouse. I have tried 3
different mice and it won't recognize any of them. I unistalled the one that
came with software, did a restart and a shutdown, reinstalled it and the
computer still won't recognize it. After I installed the software, I checked
and the mouse programming was there but the drivers were not. I have
downloaded all of the driver updates from gateway and even did a BIOS update
and still nothing.
Also, just to mention, these mice work on my other computers so I know it is
not the mice.

NO Kidding!!!! If you had read my original post then you would have seen
that I've already tried all of your great ideas.

I came to this forum to get help that I couldn't get from troubleshooting.

Can someone offer me some USEFUL information and not just repeat the steps
that I've already taken?

Please read my original post to see what I've already done.

- I have tried every know troubleshooting step known to man for mouse and
USB problems.
-I have done all updates that Windows has to offer.
-I have done all driver updates from Gateway.
-I have done a BIOS update.
-I have done a complete destructive system recovery.

Do you think the way to ingratiate yourself to people who are trying to help
you is by giving them a hard time (even if someone possibly missed what you
have already tried).

Enjoy your problems. You won't get any help from me, and I'm sure there are
lots of others who feel the same way after reading such a response from you.

Ken,
I'm not saying I didn't appreciate Mark's help and I apologize if I came
across that way but people come to this forum for help and advice and hope
they can get it from a knowledgeable source.
Those who offer assistance need to take the time to completely read the
posts, assess the problem and as accurately as they can offer assistance.
Those who just jump and offer suggestions without all of the information
could cause someone to create more problems with their computer than they
originally had to begin with.
Not just once, but twice, Mark had replied to my posts offering
suggestions without looking at the entire picture.
You, as an " MVP " should know how important it is to pay attention to
detail. You wouldn't want to go in for surgery without the doctor completely
understanding what the problem was and just fixing something that probably
had nothing to do with the original problem to begin with, now would you? You
could go in for an apendectomy and come out with a vasectomy.
I will look elsewhere for help. I thought I could get it here. I guess
not....
