Mouse Question

Without warning, the scroll wheel on my 5-year-old mouse
stopped working. Left and right buttons work fine, as does
the pointing-the-cursor function.

Time for a new mouse - or could this be some other problem
within the computer?

(This is on a 5-year-old Gateway computer, W-2000/pro,
plenty of HD space.)

Thanks.

it could be hardware, but it could be software drivers as well. try
removing then reloading the drifers. If your mouse has a ball, perhaps
you could remove it and clean inside.

5 yrs is a long time in mouse-years. And a new MS optical is pretty
cheap.

1. I have removed and cleaned the ball. No change in
behavior. (It does not appear that the ball is connected
mechanically and internally to the scroll wheel.)

2. Have not tested the mouse on another computer - no
opportunity other than going to a public library and seeking
permission to do so - which I'm reluctant to do.

Thanks for the ideas - keep them coming. :)

You need to clean the rollers. Cruft builds up and I usually have to
use my penknife to chip it off.

Check your software configuration. That smooth scrolling stuff can
magically turn on and it very confusing.

I purchased a new mouse for about $25, installed it, and all
works well. That suggests to me that the original problem
was mechanical within the old mouse. Thanks for the
assistance.
