mouse problems

what could the possible reasons be with a ps2 optical mouse suddenly not
working correctly. It will work then all of a sudden start to jump around or
not respond.
I've tried a few mice resulting in the same problem. Changed the surface that
the mouse hovers over with no luck either.

You say its a PS2 mouse, but is it a wireless mouse with the receiver
plugged into the ps2 port? If so, are the batteries okay?, is the
receiver not too close to something like the monitor?

Otherwise I'm thinking malware/virus.
Changing to a USB mouse if you had one handy would help but I'm sure
everyone has a 2nd mouse hanging around, right :)

It is a wired mouse (the other mice I tested were also wired). This computer
is not connected to the internet so I don't think its malware but its
possible........ since it does have a modem connection where it connects
1x/day to a state computer for verification of patient insurance status.

If that's all you do, it does make me doubt the virus issue. But there
are checkers for that available if you wanted to run one.

Turn the mouse on its back. Use compressed air or lung-power to blow the
junk out of the optical sensor. Turn the mouse back over. Lift it about an
inch and whack it down on a soft surface.

Try now.

What part of "I've tried a few mice resulting in the same problem" did
you have a hard time understanding?

Well, all of it. Didn't make a lick of sense. He seemed to be commenting
(favorably, I might add) on the Flouridation of public water supplies, but
that didn't seem germane to a conversation about Chastic Fibrosis (a disease
usually found in foxes).
