Mouse problems

Chris

hi all,
thanks in advance.
i am running winxp build 2600.
for a while now i have been using a Microsoft wireless
optical wheeled mouse. occasionally it would seem the
mouse would hang, stop responding for a few seconds.
move the mouse but the pointer doesn't move, click (left
or right) and nothing happens. i un/reinstalled mouse
drivers, went to websites and download new drivers,
changed batteries, sincrinized mouse and receiver,
relocated receiver so many times i could do it in my
sleep. the issue was particularly bad if i was using
online programs, ie, outlook express, msn chat (any chat
program), eudora, or online games. i have changed
network cards though the mouse and network cards use
different IRQs and memory assignments. i have tried
different pci slots for the network cards. the issue got
so bad i couldn't even use the wireless mouse anymore so
i went back to a wired mouse. still the same issue but
not as pronounced. instead of hanging/nonresponding for
lone periods (up to minutes) it only hangs for a couple-
few seconds. this nonresponce of the mouse happens
rarely when not using online type programs.
an example:
can be playing single player diablo and not have a
problem. go on network, mulitplayer, and the
nonresponsiveness of the mouse begins. unhook the
network wire from the back of the computer, hook it in
another computer, enter multiplayer, and no mouse
problems while using online programs with the second
computer (almost identical machines).
i have updated drivers for video, sound, network cards
(tried so many card/slot combinations my current one is
numbered 17, windows tracks that stuff.), and am using
directX 9.
i am about ready to pull my hair out.
hoping i don't have to reformat (the only thing i havn't
done).
any ideas are welcome.
thanks again,
Chris

Check your Event Log for events from the 'Atapi' system,
under the 'System' branch. Or you may find error reports
from other subsytems which may help you identify which
piece of hardware is at fault.
To access the event log:
