Mouse Problem

Problem: Mouse pointer sometimes moves by itself.

Computer: HP Vectra under XP SP2 (about 4 yrs old).

Mouse: New OEM Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse to a USB 2.0 card.

Driver: IP32Eng, just downloaded from Microsoft (and rebooted). Previous
driver might have been IP5_0Eng which would have been installed for an
Intellipoint. I upgraded the driver when the problem became a nuisance.

Problem: Small movements of the mouse will send the pointer to the edge of
the screen. Just now it went to the Start button when I didn't think I'd
moved it at all. This happens in several applications, from Solitaire to
the TextPad editor.

Thanks,
Peter

UPDATE

Anomalous behavior in some apps, 5 to 10 secs after being switched to:
--Device Manager will refresh the tool bar.
--Outlook Express will refresh a section of the screen (some or all of
one window, containing the complete lines in that window (either the folders
or subject windows)).
--Internet Chess Club, Blitzin 2.5, will refresh a random window most of
the time.
--FreeCell Pro will refresh the whole window; this will also happen
after closing a dialog.

Textpad, Explorer, Solitaire and Control Panel seem to be immune.

Simple suggestion I'm sure you'll have tried, have you checked the
optical mouse is not on a highly reflective surface? This can cause
mouse jumping all over the screen.

Alternatively, there are settings in the control panel\Mouse\Motion to
adjust the sensitivity of the mouse. Set it to a level with which you
are comfortable and see how you go.

There are other potential causes, but give the simple ones a shot first
and let us know how you go

Thanks Arkady, I think you've got it! I was using a mouse pad from CDI
Information Services and you would think that would do the job, but it is
shiny and i remember having problems with it in the past -- I just wish i'd
thrown it way then!

I still have the other 'anomalous behavior' though, any ideas about that?

Could you clarify for me what is happening with those windows when you
say that the tool bar is being refreshed? Are you noticing the icons on
the tool bar being re-drawn, or is something else amiss?

Cheers

Maybe i should have said that they are being redrawn after the whole row of
icons is erased. But if they aren't erased i don't see how you could tell
they are being redrawn.

Thanks for the update Peter, I'll confess I've not seen something like
this happen before. My gut tells me that it's a display adapter
configuration issue. I would suggest confirming that you are using the
latest version of your video card's drivers and that your screen refresh
rate is up at an appropriate level.

As I say, this is more of a gut feeling so if the above doesn't work I
would suggest starting a new thread with an appropriate title so that
someone who has dealt with this before can better assist you.

Cheers

I upgraded the driver (automatically) and still have the problem,
so i'll open a new thread as you suggested.

Thanks for your help Arkady,
Peter
