Mouse Problem

OS: windows 2000 professional, built on NT Tech
Problem: all of the sudden, the computer does not
recognize the mouse. The mouse is pluggd in, but no mouse
is found when i go to control panel, then mouse, and click
on hardware. there is no mouse under devices. i've tried
unplugging and plugging back in the mouse, and nothing
happens!

Help.. what should i do!

Details, please.
What type of mouse? Is it USB/PS2/pneumatic/infrared/hydraulic/acoustic
or other? Wired or wireless? Is the problem intermittent, or did this
happen suddenly and stay that way? Is the mouse full of hairballs?

Mice and mouse cables do fail from time to time. Does the mouse work on
other machines? Does a different borrowed mouse work on your machine?
