mouse pointer arrow to hand switch

Hello, and thanks for reading this. I have a mouse
problem. I am running the latest XP (current upgrades)
and the default windows mouse scheme. I have a laptop
with a ps/2 port wheel mouse plugged in (non-optical). The
pointer changes from a normal arrow to a hand when it is
hovering over any file/document in the 'my documents'
folder, or anywhere in the file explorer area. The file
seems to be 'preselected'. The same thing occurs on the
desktop. If I want to open it, it is ALREADY highlighted
and I only click once to open it. I just noticed this a
few days ago, and wondered if there is a setting where I
can return to the original 'arrow is an arrow' setting
when just hovering over any documents or programs the
mouse does not highlight the link. I want to be able to
double-click on the folder or program icon, and not just
single click. I do not want the mouse to act like
internet links when surfing over my files. I do not use
ClickLock, nor Turn on Pointer Precision. My machine is
an HP Pavilion ze5300 running XP home. Any help would be
GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks

Check settings in Folder Options> General> Click Items as follows. It
sounds like you have single click enabled along with the additional
"underline icon titles consistent with my browser."
