Mouse freezes randomly

My mouse cursor frequently (a few times a minute) hangs
for a couple seconds, and occasionally freezes
completely. I can use the keyboard to navigate, but the
only fix for the frozen mouse is to reboot. This happens
several times a day. I have Windows XP Home. Any ideas
how to stop this aggravating thing?

Thanks in advance...Jim

I had the same problem a few months ago. It was a PS2 mouse. It's gone as
soon as I changed it to USB mouse.

One possibility to check: it may be a result of the mouse driver and
the video driver arguing over which controls the pointer. It is easy to
check on - Control Panel - Display - Settings, Click Advanced, and on
the Troubleshoot page reduce the acceleration slider one notch or two.
If one does it, there is negligible loss of performance: if two are
needed look for updated video drivers from the maker's site.
