Mouse Click Hell

The reason for changing OS's from XP Home Edition to XP Pro Edition
was -desperation.

I have a compaq 5000. It came bundled with oem xp home. After about
five months the nightmare began. Whenever I would right mouse click,
the endlessly floating hour glass. The only task I could do was
alt-ctrl-del. If I went into Task Manager -stopped the explore.exe
process -the freeze condition would cease. However, in that
explore.exe was no longer running I had to use task manager to log
off, or reboot. Once back into the OS, fine -unless I right clicked.
(What is interesting is that the Tasm Manager processes indicated
5000k -and if I right click the explore.exe process would be 12000k.)

So this got to be so annoying and because it was oem compaq I bought a
full microsoft version, xp pro. Installed this fresh full new version.
Installed my applications. Ran the updates. Everything running good.
Thought all was perfectly normal. Suddenly, this right click mouse
scenario begins all over.

Unbelievable! I go into my computer right click to check out
properties...freezes.

Anywhere that a right click would be usefull...freezes.

In event viewer there are no issues.

I swapped mouse devices. Just to be safe. Now I use a microsoft mouse.
Replaced the compaq. No help. Right click, freezes.

I can't imagine this right click mouse issue to be wide spread. If
anyone can suggest a remedy this would prevent me from switching back
to my Mac 9x.

Thanks

Could be the driver(s) that the mouse runs with. Try unistalling the
driver(s) and reinstalling. Could also be a symptom of some other hardware
conflict. Is the mouse a USB mouse or a serial mouse? Is the new mouse the
same (usb/serial) as the old one?

This has nothing to do with the mouse. Instead it is something installed
that is set for processing the "action" selection for different file or
object types. When you right click on a file or any object you bring up
a list of actions you can perform on that object. Some programs add an
action for all files (things like AV). I suspect it is one of these that
is the problem. What are the different kinds of objects that you can
right click on where this occurs. If you boot in safe mode does it
happen?

One - this is not a Home vs Pro matter, though it may be one of 'Compaq
customised' against 'not customised'. Compaq are notorious for having
their own proprietary hardware, and a version of Windows customised to
go with it.

One possibility that is worth trying is that it may be a result of the
mouse driver and the video driver arguing over which controls the
pointer. It is easy to check on - Control Panel - Display - Settings,
Click Advanced, and on the Troubleshoot page reduce the acceleration
slider one notch or two. If one does it, there is negligible loss of
performance: if two are needed look for updated video drivers from the
maker's site.

Another is a bad context menu handler for right clicks. Start - Run -
regedit and open to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Target Context
If it is present, highlight it and first File - export, then delete.

Repeat at similar places under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\

Hello

In safe mode the affect of right mouse clicking freezes the computer.
I can unfreeze they OS if I stop (task manager) the explore.exe
process. However I must log off, log on, to return to normal. Desktop
object, control panel objects, anywhere I'm able to right click the
system freezes.

In display settings, advanced, I reduced the notch all the way down.
This did not prevent the freeze. In regedit there were no 'target
context' items.

This I do know. If I fdisk, reinstall fresh, I'll almost be assured to
engage this phenomena of the right click freeze. It would be helpful
just to fix this anomoly and use XP Pro as it was intended.

This is very frustrating. If a solution can be achived this will be
good news.
Thanks
