Motherboard replacement issue

Andrew

Hi,

I am trying to replace my Pentium 4 1.8GHz (socket 478) and
motherboard (PCChips M930 series) with a new AMD athlon 3000+ (FSB
333)and motherboard Gigabyte (7NF-RZ).

I installed just the basics to see if I can get that to work, memory,
video, harddrives. no sound, optical drives, etc. Memory is DDR 266
(512MB)

Upon start up, it's have issues, it is not getting windows XP to load.
Note, it is identifying my hard drive that has the Windows XP OS
correctly (western digital 60GB, etc.), memory is identified fine and
video appears to work.

I get the following message:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start
successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused
this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or
was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose
Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings
that worked.

....
"

I get a few options presented to me

-Safe mode
-Safe Mode with Networking
-Safe Mode with Command prompt
-Last Known Good Configuration
-Start Windows Normally

None of the above work. Any option I pick, the system restarts and
comes back to the same screen.

any ideas on what to check for? I installed per the manual and I
double-checked all the connections.

thanks for your feedback. Andrew

You MUST do a repair install because none of the AMD drivers
are loaded. Your data should be safe. Instructions
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q315341&ID=KB;EN-US;Q315341

There are other instruction on other web sites, but that
will get you started, otherwise Google for replace

Don't despair.

I think you will have to do a Repair/Install (You wont lose any
installed programs or settings.) You might have to do a telephone
reactivation. At least, that has been the case when I replaced at least
two MB's. The process is painless and has always solved the problem at
this end.

Good luck.

Normally, and assuming a retail license (many OEM installations
and licenses are not transferable to a new motherboard - check yours
before starting), unless the new motherboard is virtually identical
(same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS version, etc.) to the
one on which the WinXP installation was originally performed, you'll
need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at
the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q315341

The "why" is quite simple, really, and has nothing to do with
licensing issues, per se; it's a purely technical matter, at this
point. You've pulled the proverbial hardware rug out from under the
OS. (If you don't like -- or get -- the rug analogy, think of it as
picking up a Cape Cod style home and then setting it down onto a Ranch
style foundation. It just isn't going to fit.) WinXP, like Win2K
before it, is not nearly as "promiscuous" as Win9x when it comes to
accepting any old hardware configuration you throw at it. On
installation it "tailors" itself to the specific hardware found. This
is one of the reasons that the entire WinNT/2K/XP OS family is so much
more stable than the Win9x group.

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will also probably require re-activation, unless you have a
Volume Licensed version of WinXP Pro installed. If it's been more
than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key,
you'll most likely be able to activate via the Internet without
problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone
call.
