Motherboard Problem

A

Recently my computer turned off and when I went to turn it back on I
heard a load *Crack Crack* noise and so I quickly pulled the power
cable out from the back of the tower. I then opened it up and could
smell a horrid burnt smell but couldn't find the source of it. After
looking around at the motherboard for some time, I found that a corner
of a black square on the board beside the cpu had broke off. I then
plugged the tower back up and turned it on and found that it ran just
fine and that the temperatures in the bios seemed normal around 37C.
But after about an hour it had turned off again. I left it alone for
awhile to let it cool off, thinking that was the problem, I then tried
to turn it back on again but just heard a small fan kick on and then it
died again. Now nothing happens when I push the powerbutton.
Nothing is overclocked.

AMD 3000+
nForce4-a754 - Elite Group - 3 weeks old
VGA SPPHRE X700 - 3 weeks old
Thermaltake TR2 W0070 430W - 3 weeks old

I tired circling what I was talking about in a picture that I got from
newegg of my motherboard model.

You need a new motherboard. That component looks like a voltage
regulator and is now a voltage regulator with a bit missing.

Just a question...WHY THE **** DID YOU THINK A BOARD WITH A BIG LUMP
MISSING OUT OF A COMPONENT WOULD STILL WORK PERFECTLY OK? ARE YOU A
****ING IDIOT?

Don't know if the last message went through but, yeah that was stupid
on my part, but what do you think could have cause that to happen? The
board and powersupply are not even a month old yet.

That's one of the power FETs in the voltage regulator section and unless
you have decent soldering skills you can kiss the board goodbye.

thanks, does anyone have any idea what could have caused the system to
turn off and to make the power FET crack off?

A manufacturing defect, defective power supply, some critter or loose
part got in the wrong spot and caused a short.
