Most ".exe" files not opening in Win2K

D

Dave T.

Many of my .EXE programs are not opening including
regedit, regedit32. This is what happened:

-I found and could not delete a program called "ebates"
so I changed what program is used to open the program to
keep it from opening.
-I selected Adobe font manager as the program for Win2K
to open it with.
-I immediately noticed many other .exe files changing to
an Adobe font manager icon and they all started opening
with Adobe font manager.
-I uninstalled Adobe Font Manager, but it did not help.
-Now all those .exe files are not associated to any
program and won't open.

How do I fix this *WITHOUT* reinstalling Win2k? I really
don't want to lose any information because it is not
backed up. Please help if you can. Thanks,

Dave T.

Go to McAfee (http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp) and/or Trend
(http://housecall.antivirus.com ) and perform an online scan of your platform.

Please report back your results.

That's NOT what I asked. Please run one or both of the referenced online scanners --
PLEASE !

| I ran a virus scan with definitions dated 18 Dec 03 and
| it did not find anything. I also am running ZoneAlert,
| Adaware and spybot and have my messinger service locked
| down. I have all my win2k security updates installed.
| Thanks,

Pegasus \(MVP\)

- Install your disk as a slave disk in some other Win2000 PC.
- Backup your files.
- Follow David Lipman's suggestions.
- Consider your backup strategy. If you're files are important
then you must back them up every week. If you don't back
them up then they are not important, because you're prepared
to lose them. This time you got a warning - next time you might
not be so lucky.

OK, I'll run the online scan tonight and get back to you
tomorrow. I'm at work right now.
