Mono Printing - colour tanks are used up

Hi - I doubt this is a Windows-related problem, but I hope someone
will be along to help!

Almost all the printing and copying on my Canon Pixma MP750 is done in
black and white, and yet the colour tanks continue to empty. Can
anyone advise why this happens??

We have a very low print and copy load (a few pages a week), and very
little of that involves colour (say, 5% of some of the documents). The
Printer Properties option in File>Print is set to Grayscale and the
screen shows Mono Printing on Plain Paper. Despite these settings and
usage, the colour tanks need to be replaced about half as often as the
black.

I would be grateful for any info on stopping this happening.

Absolutely standard in ink jet printers..... the addition of the color inks
make the black look 'blacker'. And when the color tank(s) are empty, you
probably can't print anything.

Cari - many thanks for this. So, I guess the ink-sellers (aka printer
manufacturers) get you every which-way.

Yes, they do. I got a used Lexmark Optra S laser printer to use for
monochrome... cost me all of $14.75 on eBay ($50 for shipping) and it's the
default printer for the whole home network. On its arrival about 2 1/2
years ago, I purchased a new toner cartridge ($35) for it. We're still on
that one and it shows no signs of getting low.

Inkjet printers are for pretty color documents and photos. Ordinary
documents - forget the inkjet and go laser.
