Monitoring Internet Traffic

Is there any way to monitor internet traffic. I am interested in seeing
what programs are using the internet. When I boot my machine I notice
internet activity on the DSL box. Since I haven't started any programs I am
wondering what is using the internet before I do. I can only assume that
things like Windows Update are checking stuff as well as other programs
unbeknownst to me. Running Vista Home Premium.

Hi,

Propably Vista phoning home, to check if your mp3's are all paid for. ;-)

This used to be a good utility:

To be honest, I have no clue if it runs on Vista.

Good luck, and please post back anything worth mentioning regarding
networktraffic in here. :)

In adition, you could use something like "Process Explorer" or "Process
Monitor" to see which programs/processes are running at the time
(Sysinternals.com). This should help narrow down the possibilities.

-me.
Let this forum know if this helps or if you figure out the problem, so
others can benefit.

I *think* you meant that as a joke...but are you certain? Last time I put a
sniffer on the line Zone Alarm was still playing that game every time the
machine was booted (and of course not asking permission...)

Ethereal is dead. The developer of Ethereal (Gerald Combs) changed jobs but
his old employer owned the trademark of "Ethereal." He did take the project
with him, however, and it's now alive and well under the name "Wireshark."

The story behind the name change:

Wireshark version 0.99.8 is the most recent stable distribution (documented
to support Vista although I've not tested that claim); download it through
the page at
http://www.wireshark.org/download.html

Microsoft bought Winternals (which owned the Sysinternals utilities) in
2006. Much to the amazement of the user community Microsoft continues to
enhance and distribute the Sysinternals utilities from the free Technet
site:

Hi Joe,

Well, it was ment the way you interpretted it: a joke or not.
How can we be sure?
I don't put too much trust into M$ when it comes to privacy, datamining,
etc.

OK, thanks for that addition!
I am going to check it right away.
